Guiding Coalition

What makes this initiative so powerful and unique is that Choosing To Thrive was designed to work on both the individual and community level. On the community level we have what is called a Guiding Coalition that is responsible for two key factors.

  1. Making sure resources are available for the Leaders for Change and
  2. Developing a strategic plan that will allow them to work on eliminating barriers that hold individuals in poverty.

Our Guiding Coalition is made up of community members, Legislators, faith-based representatives, Executive Directors from our major nonprofits such as the Salvation Army, Contact Community Services, Spanish Action League, and Housing Visions, etc. as well as representatives from the Onondaga County Department of Labor, Catholic Charities, Literacy Coalition, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse University, Le Moyne College, and BOCES. We are also fortunate to have the Commissioner of the Department of Social Services sitting at our table. But the most important individuals that are a part of the Guiding Coalition are the Leaders for Change themselves. They are the ones who help us understand the barriers and the changes that need to be made.
